2017? Bring it on!

What a year 2016 was! I think we can all agree we had a bit of a bumpy ride of it all. Whether voting results were what we wanted or not, it all created a lot of unpleasantness and vitriol and I hate arguments. On a world scale we all felt it, but I also know there were a lot of very personal journeys you all went on. I know I did.

Looking back, every year has its highs and its lows – for all of us. For me, it’s not just about the things I physically do but the people I meet and the great memories.

One of the real pleasures of 2016 was of course meeting and getting to know my fellow Victoria editors! Five experienced journalists with their own specialist knowledge but also a passion to share and discover more about each other’s worlds. I always learn so much from them – thanks girls!

And not forgetting it wasn’t so long ago that I was on a once-in-a-life time experience – camping out in the Aussie rainforest, being showered with bugs and creepy crawlies on a regular basis.

But as much I reflect on the fun times I’ve had, I can’t wait to get started on what I do next – you know me, always keeping busy.

There is no getting around it… The biggie adventure for me in 2017 is my bid to fly solo around the world (with my Mildred of course!). Only eight women have ever done it in history so I’m bidding to become the ninth.

I have always wanted to fly a plane and it’s something that wasn’t an opportunity handed to women when I was younger. I am very proud to say that in 2013 I earned my private pilot’s license and this trip has been in the planning ever since. All being well, I should be able to set off in April, so not long now!

The idea of flying over the Pyramids of Giza, Niagara Falls, across oceans – I am so excited, and between you and me, more than a little nervous (but when did that stop me?). It’s going to be an incredible journey – literally and emotionally, I am sure.

You’d think that would be enough, but no! I want to achieve more. Perhaps nothing quite as epic as my solo flight, but I know there are still lots of little things in my life that need my attention and I could work on.

Spending more time with my gorgeous children is always a must-do. With all of our schedules getting busier and busier it’s not always easy but making the time is important. What is life about if you can’t enjoy the down time with the ones you love?

My health is also an absolute priority. Nothing in life is guaranteed but by hell you can work at it to give yourself the highest chances. They say that around 80% of disease and illness is preventable by correct diet and exercise. Those are encouraging odds and I am always one to go with the numbers.

Taking a well-deserved holiday is on the list of things to do, too. I love to get away, and although I will be seeing the world on my solo trip I also want to have a bit of time when I can really relax. Not to say I am going to sit on my bum and do nothing. You’ll find me hiking the British coast with my daughter or visiting a country I have never been to – just because.

I think 2017 should be the year we all say ‘just because’. Just because I can, just because I want to, just because it’s about time! I’d love to hear more about what you plan to do in 2017, big or small, fun or scary… I take inspiration from all of you!
