The spring clean you'll WANT to do (yes, really)

Turn your spring clean into a spring makeover with our tips and your home will look fresh all season long.

If you see cleaning as a necessary evil, you probably don’t relish the thought of doing an annual deep clean. But if you use the chance to give your home a new look too, you might even enjoy yourself – and your home will certainly look better for it.

Check out our springtime décor tips for inspiration…

Choose floral fabrics

An easy change is to swap your duvet and cushion covers for spring-inspired patterns. Floral prints are a stylish option – as long as you avoid the chintzy look by going for a print in bold or even luminous colours, or perhaps choosing plant prints instead of flowers. Alternatively, you could look for designs in spring-time colours, such as sunny yellow, sky blue, lavender and coral.

To keep the colours and patterns as bright as the day you bought them, wash them with Ariel 3in1 Pods, which clean, lift stains and brighten to keep your fabrics looking like new.

Bring in fresh flowers

Flowers are synonymous with spring, so breathe new life into your home by bringing in some blooms. And it’s not about spending a fortune on fancy bouquets – a handful of daffodils or sunflowers in a tall vase will give the whole room a lift for just a couple of pounds. If you have pets, remember to check which varieties are toxic for them – for example, lilies are toxic to cats.

Lighten up your curtains

In winter, thick, heavy curtains are great for keeping the chilly air out and enhancing a cosy atmosphere. But when we have warmer, lighter days, it’s nice to keep the curtains open and let the light in as much possible.

Pack away your heavy curtains and trade them for some made in a lightweight material, such as linen, muslin or organza. This will make the whole room light up when the sun’s shining.

Bounce the light around

Make the most of all that light coming through your new lightweight curtains by carefully positioning your mirrors. Hang a big mirror on the wall next to the one with the window to bounce the light coming in around the whole room, making it feel bigger as well as brighter.

Make sure your stainless steel is at its light-bouncing best too by tackling limescale, which can dull your kitchen and bathroom fittings. Use Viakal to dissolve the crusty white stuff in seconds. Finish off with a polish and your bathroom and kitchen will look sparkling new.

Remove your rug

Rugs are great for warming up a wooden floor or tiles, but why not try whipping it away once the weather warms up? Your room will feel bigger and cooler.

To add interest to your floor tiles, use tile stencils to create some gorgeous DIY designs, and keep them always-sparkling with Flash Multi-Surface Concentrated Cleaner. For wooden floors, the gorgeous-smelling Mandarin and Cedarwood Flash Wooden Floors Cleaner will keep them looking their best.

Grow a window garden

Not only will lush green herbs look lovely on your windowsill, but you can take cuttings to add fresh flavours to your food too.

If you haven’t got the time (or patience) to grow herbs from seed, do a mini cheat by buying a few ready-grown herb pots from the supermarket, and pop them in some pretty pots. Then it’s just a case of making sure they get lots of light and watering them regularly to keep their soil damp.

Wash your garden furniture

With the al-fresco season on its way, you’ll be starting to think about your outside space. So use the chance to uncover your patio furniture and give it a good clean.

Use a brush to get rid of any settled dust and cobwebs before washing it with hot water and a squirt of Fairy Liquid. You could even give it a fresh lick of paint – perhaps in a spring-time colour to brighten things up.

Once your furniture is sorted you’ll be inspired to get outside, even if it means lighting a fire and snuggling under blankets. This is a British spring, after all.
