Summer laundry: how to achieve the perfect wash

It’s the top time to blitz through those laundry piles – here’s how to make the best of it

Summer brings so many joys – trips to the coast, Wimbledon, ice cream, the smell of cut grass – and then of course there’s the chance to fly through the laundry, as you can peg everything outside and it dries in what feels like a matter of minutes.

But, while you no doubt have a laundry routine that you stick to – a favourite detergent, a particular cycle and a set temperature – it’s worth rethinking this, as you may not be doing what’s best for your clothes and linens.

Here are the things to consider on your next laundry day:

Have you found the right scent for you?

Little beats the smell of freshly cleaned laundry. Well, something does: the smell of laundry that’s been washed in one of Bold’s four gorgeous fragrances. Find the one that you love, and you’ll never look at laundry day the same way again! So which one is right for you?

Lavender and Camomile will take your senses on a relaxing stroll through fragrant fields of fresh lavender, and let your cares melt away. This one’s great for your bedsheets, helping to create an atmosphere of serenity and harmony for a blissful night’s sleep.

If you like the finer things in life, Gold Orchid offers an elegant fragrance containing precious notes of silk tree flower, mallow blossom and a delicate touch of almond milk.

If you’re a floral fan, then lotus flower, water lily, blue forget-me-not and star flowers combine in Spring Awakening to infuse your fabrics with the scent of a warm spring evening. Bliss!

Or for an uplifting fragrance, Sparkling Bloom blends yellow poppy, vibrant yuzu blossom and acacha to make you feel energised and happy.

Team your chosen scent with the matching Lenor Fabric Softener and you’ll be treated to your favourite fragrance from laundry day right through to the day it’s back in the basket.

Have you read the label?

It’s boring but it’s true, the washing guidelines are there for a reason. And while you might not want to do five different washes on different cycles, the most important checks to make are whether you can run it through the machine, or if it’s hand wash or dry clean only, and whether you can tumble dry it.

Many fabrics don’t respond well to high heat, which can cause fading, bobbling and shrinking, so only tumble-dry if it’s absolutely necessary, and if the label states you can do so.

Can you keep it cool?

For many years, if you wanted decent stain removal, you had to wash at a high temperature, which can damage your clothes and cause colours to fade over time.

But now, with advancements in both washing machines and detergents, it’s possible to get clean, fresh-smelling clothes while only washing at 30°C – or even 20°C if your machine allows it – which is good for your clothes, wallet and the environment.

Bold Gel Cold Wash is the perfect detergent for these washes, as it’s specially designed to tackles stains at low temperatures. Plus it comes in the four fragrances listed above. Perfect!

Where should you hang it?

If you have an outside space and it’s not raining, you should hang your washing outside to dry. This is better than a slow indoor dry, which risks musty smells.

Be sure to hang white shirts, sheets and towels out on a bright, sunny day, as sunshine is a natural disinfectant and helps brighten whites. For colours, choose cloudier days or hang laundry in a shade-dappled part of the garden, so that direct sunlight doesn’t bleach out your bold hues.

If the weather’s not playing ball and you have a tumble dryer, you don’t have to miss out on those lovely summer smells. Simply pop a Lenor Dryer Sheet in Spring Awakening or Summer Breeze in the machine, and your laundry will come out fresh, soft, static-free and smelling of summer.

With these tips, you should get a great wash, every time!

Bold scent

Spring awakening appeals to me the most. After the long dreary wet winter it hints at the better spring days to come, and I love floral scents. I really like the idea of my washing not only coming out clean and fresh but with a lovely long lasting fragrance,

Wonderful Spring

Spring Awakening for me - I love floral fragrances and this one sounds wonderful.

Soothing Lavender

I love Lavender and camamile. It is a lovely relaxing scent, and when drying on the raditator the scent radiates around the room. Its better when laundry can be dried outside .
