How to make your clothes look and feel newer for longer

A new outfit is a guaranteed mood boost, but can you keep that feeling for wash after wash? With these tips for keeping new clothes in top condition, you can.

There’s nothing like the feeling of a brand new outfit. Standing out from the crowd with vivid colours and embracing the joy that comes with showing off your new style.

New clothes even boost our mood: surveys show 80% of us feel that our fashion purchases make us feel confident and stylish. So it’s no wonder that almost 70% of people purchase new clothes for the thrill of that just-bought feeling.

But we’ve all experienced the disappointment of clothes that lose their sparkle after a while. That’s why eight out of 10 people get “first wash anxiety” – the feeling that they’ve washed out the newness and that their garment isn’t the same.

It doesn’t have to be this way. By taking care over laundry you can ensure your latest purchase feels like new wash after wash. Here’s how…

1. Check the label

With clothes manufacturers constantly creating innovative fabrics, it pays to check the label even after years of laundry experience. That goes double for those special-occasion pieces in silk or wool, or with delicate embellishments like sequins or beads.

2. Turn clothes inside out

Protect the surface of your garment by turning it inside out, so the fabric that everyone sees will keep its like-new appearance. To make sure that it doesn’t get snagged inside the machine, close any fastenings like buttons or zips.

3. Use a laundry bag

For extra protection with delicate items or your favourite pieces, a mesh laundry bag can help. It lets the water and detergent in for gentle cleaning, but reduces the friction between garments and the laundry drum, so there’s less wear and tear.

4. Air-dry your clothes

All that heat and agitation in the tumble-dryer isn’t good for clothes, weakening their fibres and shortening their lifespan. So to keep your favourite pieces looking new, stick to drying them on the line or on a clotheshorse in a warm, ventilated room.

5. Use Ariel 3in1 pods

The triple action of Ariel’s FibreScience technology is designed to keep clothes looking clean like new*. Ariel 3in1 Pods not only clean but also removes stains and brighten clothes so you clothes look brilliantly.

To prove that clothes can look as good as new after washing with Ariel 3in1 Pods, Ariel teamed teaming up with world-renowned fashion designer Giles Deacon.

Together they launched the Ariel & Giles Deacon Eek! Clothing Collection at a pop-up shop in London. What shoppers didn’t know was that the clothes weren’t new at all: they had previously been stained and then washed using Ariel 3in1 Pods.

If you knew that your seemingly “new” clothes had been through the wash before purchasing them, would you still buy them? And yet every shopper that entered the store believed the clothes were new, demonstrating that Ariel “cleans like new” in one wash.
