Now's the time to feel better than ever

Now's the time to feel better than ever

When it comes to health and wellbeing there’s never been a better time to be over 50. There’s plenty you can do to stay on top.

I’m Patsy Westcott, Victoria’s Health & Wellbeing Editor, and I don’t know about you, but as a woman of a certain age I certainly don’t intend on slowing down any time soon. I still go out dancing at least once a week and I love to cook, eat, read, travel and explore. I’m deeply and forever grateful that fifty something women are no longer expected to have a perm and wear a Crimplene cardigan.

Healthwise too things have progressed by a zillion miles since our mothers and grandmothers mouthed conversations about ‘The Change of Life’ behind raised hands. Better childhood diets, better healthcare and, let’s face it, better hair dye and slap, mean that women our age feel and look healthier than ever before. These days midlife sisters are definitely doing for themselves, even though at times it seems as if the rest of the world has yet to catch up.

But there’s no doubt we can’t take our health as much for granted as we could back in the day. First there’s the menopause. Goodbye menstrual mood swings, cramps and cravings. Hello hot flushes, insomnia, foggy brain and a stubborn muffin top that you can no longer see off with a few days calorie cutting. There’s also the little matter of loss of fertility, which you may greet with relief or regret, but you certainly can’t ignore.

And then there are the things most of us try to push to the back of our minds: the risk of breast cancer, osteoporosis (brittle bone disease), heart disease and, perhaps the biggest fear of all, dementia, all start to become more real at this time of life.

But before you throw up your hands in despair, the good news is that there are loads of great ways to stay fit and well and overcome troublesome health issues. That’s where Victoria comes in. As a health writer of many years I know where to find the information you need to help stay fit and well at this stage of life, as well as the experience to pick out the diamonds from amid the dross. Each month I’ll be sifting through the latest findings about the issues that matter to women of a certain age and sharing what I discover so you can continue leading the fabulous, fun life you deserve to live… and never have to buy a Crimplene cardigan.
