How to achieve a bright, white smile

How to achieve a bright, white smile

A winning smile is the ultimate confidence booster, especially if you’re off on a date-night

If you’re heading out on a date – whether you’re back on the dating scene anew or going out with your long-term partner – before even thinking about your LBD, it makes sense to ensure you’re wearing your best smile.

That’s why we’ve asked Dr Uchenna Okoye, Oral-B Smile Director and Clinical Director of London Smiling Dental Group, for her five essential tips.

Our teeth should be the same colour as the whites of our eyes

“As we age, our teeth turn more yellow, so a good investment is to have them professionally whitened. The trick to getting the most natural shade, is to ask your dentist to match your teeth to the whites of your eyes, as this will be the most youthful shade of white for you.”

Go bespoke with your brushing

“Brushing twice daily for two minutes each time with an electric toothbrush and a good whitening toothpaste is the key to a healthy smile and keeping your teeth white.

“However, it’s not just how long you brush for, but how you brush that counts. A great way to check you are getting the best results is to ask your dentist to give you a prescriptive brushing routine. It may be that you need to pay more attention to certain areas - this small tweak can make a big difference.”

Dr Okoye suggests trying the Oral-B Pro 600 Smart Series with Oral-B 3D White Luxe Pearl Shine to prevent stains.

Double floss

“Flossing regularly with a quality product like Oral B’s 3D White Luxe Floss will prevent dark stains between teeth that brushing can’t reach by removing plaque before it turns to stain-forming tartar. A small tip like flossing before and after you brush means you’re more likely to get a deeper, more effective clean when brushing.”

Get a smarter toothbrush

“The Oral-B Smart Series not only removes twice as much plaque as a manual toothbrush, but the innovative new Bluetooth technology can help combat bad brushing habits. My tip would be to discuss using the brush with your dentist to tailor it to your needs. The brush ensures you have constant contact with your dentist – patients can share their compliance statistics with their hygienist and dentist via email, as a way to track and discuss improvement areas and help advance their oral care routines.

Think hair and make-up

“The right tone of lipstick and hair colour not only gives your skin a youthful glow, it can make your teeth appear brighter and more youthful. Foundations and moisturisers with light-reflecting properties like Max Factor Miracle Match Foundation, combined with a toothpaste that boosts shine, will help give teeth a sparkle.

“Avoid brown or orange-based lip colours which can emphasise the yellow tones in your teeth, and consider the tone of your hair colour, too – going too far away from your natural hair colour, too light for example, can sometimes make your teeth appear darker.”

We’d love to hear from you
