Feel good, look good

Feel good, look good

Inner beauty is no myth: taking care of your mental health and wellbeing can give you a healthy glow from the inside out. Try these tips to feel your best.

When Beyoncé wanted to make the ultimate statement of beauty confidence, she sang, “Woke up like this.” For most of us, though, beauty takes a bit of work. But here’s the good news: one of the best beauty treatments is to give yourself a break, reduce stress and take some time for your mental well-being. Hair gains a bright, glossier sheen, eyes begin to shine and even the way we move looks better when we’re in a good mood. So take a look at these suggestions for maintaining that sparkle.

1. Set aside some time just for you:
The first step to taking care of yourself is making the time. Many of us have so many commitments that the things that make us happy can slip off our agenda. Block out some time with no distractions to watch a favourite TV show, pursue a hobby or curl up with a book.

2. Give yourself some space:
Sometimes a change of scenery is just what we need to refresh our perspective on life. If life is getting on top of you, why not book a mini-break? Try taking a spa break or a cultural trip on your own and leaving the family to fend for themselves for a short while. It’s a great way to practice putting yourself first – and it teaches them to appreciate what they’ve got!

3. Think positively:
Managing stress and avoiding the negative inner voice that can cause your mood to spiral downwards is proven to have health benefits: from better resistance to the common cold to a longer lifespan. Take the time to evaluate your thoughts, look for the upside and find the humour in your situation. Just a small change in outlook can have big long-term effects.

4. Healthy body, healthy mind:
Regular physical activity, whether it’s a brisk walk or playing a favourite sport, produces feel-good chemicals that have long-lasting effects on our moods. To balance out all that hard work, why not indulge in a long, lazy bath or a massage?

5. Treat yourself!
Staying healthy shouldn’t be a chore. Ensure that you make space for some of our favourite treats, like some rich chocolate or a glass of wine at the end of the day. You’ve earned it!
