The original superfood, honey is natural, healthy and smells and tastes amazing. Here’s how to get more of it in your life.

It’s delicious on toast, reviving in a hot toddy, and adds natural sweetness to tea… There’s a reason honey has been perennially popular across the world for millennia.

And it turns out honey’s exceptionally good for you too – packed with antioxidants and antibacterial properties, it’s one of nature’s natural healers.

Here are five ways you can use honey in your everyday life – see if you notice the difference.

1. Nourish your hair

Honey extract is a humectant, which means it extracts moisture from the air and seals it to maintain hydration. That’s why Herbal Essences has used it as the main ingredient in its new Bourbon & Manuka Honey Shampoo and Conditioner.

Combined with mineral-rich bourbon, aloe and safflower, it is a moisturising range that rejuvenates dull, lifeless hair, restoring moisture and shine. It’s also colour-safe, PH-balanced, and free of silicones, parabens, gluten and colourants.

2. Soften your skin

Honey has long been used as a cleanser and moisturiser, thanks to its near-magical ability to soften and heal the skin. Try combining it with almond oil and brown sugar to make a rich, effective face scrub, or use on its own as an effective moisturiser for dry patches – washing off after 20 minutes or so. Alternatively, just combine it with a little warm water to make a lovely face wash.

3. Work out better

If you find you need a little extra energy for your workout, don’t turn to energy drinks or gels – just consume a little honey, either on its own or in a drink. Research by sports scientists has shown that, taken before and during exercise, it works just as effectively as dextrose gel – but it’s a much more natural option.

4. Survive the apocalypse

Okay, hopefully it won’t come to this, but did you know that honey can last centuries? In fact, even honey found with Egyptian mummies was stable enough to eat. So it’s a great addition to your emergency food stockpile!

Also, it has traditionally been used to treat wounds, and recent research shows that this isn’t all old wives’ tales. So put some honey in your first-aid box too!

5. Sort out your cough and cold

Whether you like a little honey and ginger in your tea, or you prefer something a bit stronger in your hot toddy, the soothing effect of honey on a sore throat and stuffed sinuses is undeniable. In fact, even the NHS recommends using honey at the first signs of acute coughs or respiratory infections, in anyone over the age of one. The NHS’s recipe: squeeze half a lemon into a mug of boiled water, add 1-2tsp of honey and drink while still warm.

Honey is great as a natural sweetener in porridge and can help monitor blood sugar. Great for sterilising wounds and help healing too. Of course it's great for washing your hair and helps to moisturise and cleanse leaving it silky and smooth.

I love honey and am amazed at all the uses it has. I drink cider vinegar mixed with a little local honey during the hay fever season. It helps to relieve my symptoms. Shampoo and conditioner containing honey sounds like a wonderful idea and Herbal essences has such a good reputation. On my shopping list!
