Five reasons being a grandparent is more fun than being a parent

All the fun without the sleepless nights and round the clock responsibilites. It's time to celebrate all the best things about being a granny.

All the joy of children but without the sleepless nights and daily responsibilities? Don’t tell the parents, but here’s why it’s better being granny or grandad.

If you’re a new grandparent, congratulations – have you discovered the big secret yet? Maybe you found it out after a long day playing with your new grandchild and then heading home for a restful night’s sleep.

When you wake refreshed the next day, ready to do it all over again, it’s clear that there are some major advantages to being the grandparent. You get just as much joy out of the new arrival with only a fraction of the responsibility.

We don’t want to rub it in for those poor sleep-deprived parents. After all, we’ve all paid our parental dues in the past. But just between us, here are some of our favourite reasons why being a grandparent is the best time in life to appreciate time with the children.

You get to be the fun one

You don’t have to drag them to the dentist or go to parents’ evenings at school. Instead, you can focus on the fun things that will create memories that last forever.

So with fewer stresses and strains, you can just fill the days with family picnics, trips to the zoo or fun at the playground that you can all look back on with happiness for years to come.

You can spoil them (almost) guilt-free

After a lifetime or hard work, you may have more financial stability than ever. And that means you’re in a great position to spend a little money on the things that matter to you most – like your grandchildren.

Whether it’s helping to provide a memorable family holiday, organising a birthday party or buying a special gift, you’ll love watching your grandchild’s face light up as you help make their dreams come true. Why not? You’ve earned it.

You’ve got more time

One reason children love their grandparents is that it’s so much easier to get their undivided attention. As a parent, you might be juggling all the stresses of family life, work and finances while trying to keep a curious toddler entertained.

Now you’re a grandparent, you know that every moment with your grandchildren is to be cherished. So you’ve always got time for one more story or to see what they’re eager to show you. That’s why they love spending time with grandma and grandad.

It’s easier this time around

You’re already a dab hand at all kinds of parenting skills – from expertly soothing a colicky baby to that sixth sense for when a young explorer is heading where they shouldn’t. So being a grandparent is nothing like those disorienting first days of parenthood.

And while you’ve been taking a break from parenting, there have been some handy developments to make taking care of a little bundle of joy easier. Take Pampers Nappy Pants, for instance: changes are quicker than ever with these easy pull-on nappies. That means more time for having fun.

They keep you young at heart

As a grandparent, you appreciate things about your grandchildren that even their parents don’t yet understand. It’s only once you’ve clocked up plenty of life experience that you really understand how much fun it is to see the world through the eyes of a child again.

So there’s nothing quite like getting down on the floor to play with your grandchild and enjoy their leaps of imagination. (Even if it is a bit more of a strain on the knees these days to clamber back up.)

Grandparents vs new parent

Suzie 16/03/2018

I love been a nana to my granddaughters. This time been able to help during the night with feeds for little one letting new mum get some well earned sleep it’s a wonderful quiet time. Lots of brand new ideas from my daughters on safety that was extremely handy to know. Been there to help my daughter bath her baby with beautiful baby products when she seemed so frightened but so pleased to have a helping hand. Love the fun making cakes etc and tidying up with lots of fairy bubbles. Happ

It is wonderful to be a first time Nana, to see their faces light up when they see you and when they trust you enough to fall asleep in your arms. It’s magic. I had my son by IVF 29 years ago and although he is wonderful I always longed for more children. Now I have an amazing lovable daughter in law who asks my advice and shares their wonderful little boy with me and my husband. Life is great

Grandparents

We have 3 grandchildren 2 grandsons and 1 granddaughter age 12,1 and 7,each one is very different. They can do no wrong when they are with us,as with all grandparents we do spoil them especially at Christmas. They have toys here so if we do see them our house is full of noise and laughter, they can tell us things they can't talk to their mum about. We are always there when they need us.They make us smile more and us nannas always get bigger hugs.I wouldn't swap any of mine for anything on earth.
