How to get rid of musty smells from your home

Want to get rid of a musty smell? Not even sure what’s causing it? It could just be living in the furniture. Let’s find out how to get rid of it!

Got a musty smell lingering around the living room? Even after you’ve cleaned everything? It’s one of the most annoying things, when you can still sense a bit of must. Luckily help is at hand to tackle those musty smells…

Straight to the source

Firstly, let’s try and find what’s causing that smell in the guilty room. It might be that your furniture is just a little old but it could be something a bit more problematic, like mould. Moisture is one of the key causes of mould and this moisture can come in many forms. The culprit can be any number of things - accidental spills and even drying clothes indoors can lead to mould. With this in mind it is key to keep moisture in your home to a minimum – keeping rooms well-ventilated will help. For problems that pose a threat to your home, such as burst pipes and cracked ceilings, be sure to seek professional help.

Another key component in the build-up of mould is organic matter (such as dead skin cells). As such, you should vacuum regularly and keep your house as dust-free as possible.

Getting rid of mould can be tricky. Be prepared to wave goodbye to items such as wicker baskets and paper that have succumbed to mould as they will need to be thrown away. If carpets or fabric items have started to go mouldy assess the damage. If it’s repairable, vacuum the area (making sure your vacuum has a HEPA filter) before applying diluted vinegar to the surface.

To rid your hard surfaces of mould grab Flash Clean and Bleach Spray. Its special formula works to battle those difficult mould stains leaving surfaces sparkling. Just remember to rinse the surface after this step.

Banishing those smells

Musty smells aren’t nice. Luckily, Febreze eliminates odours. If you want to use Febreze Fabric Refresher on your fabric sofa, curtains or your carpet, Febreze will go under the covers and eliminate the odour. Febreze isn’t a cover-up spray - these just mask the smells trapped in your fabric and soft furniture. The trick lies in the active ingredient, cyclodextrin. It’s a doughnut shaped molecule that locks the odour in its ring to eliminate it. Thanks to these molecules those musty smells should be a thing of the past.

Smells so Pur

Once Febreze has dealt with those unpleasant odours, you fill your living space with continuous freshness and a lovely scent with Ambi Pur Cotton Fresh. Or how about Delicate Floral Bloom, or Lavender Sensation? There’s loads of scents to choose from! Ambi Pur 3volution provides constant freshness for up to 90 days so whichever fragrance you choose, that musty smell has definitely left the building!
